Language Arts Curriculum

The English Department at OCS is designed to meet the standards set forth by the California Department of Education. In addition, the program fully aligns with the school’s ESLRs (Expected School wide Learning Results). Students will:

  • Enhance their vocabulary.
  • Write in a variety of forms and styles for different audiences.
  • Improve reading skills and comprehension through extensive reading.
  • Master the grammar and syntax of standard written English and develop skillful fluency in its use.
  • Become effective communicators, able to succeed in today's world.
  • In addition to the classroom-based curriculum, Language Arts related events will occur throughout the school year. These include:
    • School plays
    • Book fairs
    • Speeches and presentations to members of the community

Our English/Language Arts program at the middle school level was designed in consultation with the well-respected local high schools, ensuring that our students will excel in future academic environments. Close communication between the teachers of various grade levels ensures that each scholastic year prepares the student fully for the next.
