Astro Camp
The Fifth Grade went to Astro Camp on March 14 th through 16 th. The campsite is located in the Idylwild Mountains. The three-day camp offered several hands-on experiences that enhanced the critical thinking and analytical skills.
The first day, our students got to build and launch rockets. This was probably the most interacting and entertaining activity. After dinner, we went on a nighttime hike part of which included observing the different constellations through powerful microscopes. It was amazing to see Saturn’s rings and the craters in the moon. One can’t help but praise Allah swt for creating beautiful things right down to the details. The evening concluded after we made the Isha prayer.
The next two day’s agenda included Atmosphere and Gases, Mars Landing, Magnetism and Electricity. There was a Scavenger Hunt in the evening hours. The students were very busy with the activities that each class offered. One of the highlights of the day included baking chocolate chip cookies using the solar energy. Even though the classes were based primarily around the science curriculum, many students drew interdisciplinary connections with History, Language Arts, Islamic Studies and specially Math.
Under the leadership of co-teacher Sr. Uhood Al-omar (co-teacher) and parent chaperones Zeenat Jandga, Bilkis Simjee and Yaman Kahf our stay was safe and well-organized. Br. Yaman lead us in prayers and halaqas. The girls enjoyed the tongue twisters that Sisters Zeenat and Bilkis kept on challenging them with. Where we were having tons of fun at the camp, almost all of us were missing home and families and couldn’t wait to get back to Garden Grove. Alhamdulilah, the trip was a blast and we thank Allah swt for bringing everyone back home safely
